Here is the full step by step tutorial video for making the crochet sunflower coasters . The full list of supplies, stitches used, detailed instructions with step by step images and the free printable sunflowers coasters crochet pattern are right below.

🧾Tools and Supplies

2 spools of crochet yarn, a needle, a pair of scissors and a crochet hook.
  • Medium weight yarn (worsted weight yarn) in 2 colors. Brown yarn for the flower center and yellow yarn for the petals. I am using acrylic yarn. Other types of yarn like cotton yarn will also work great.
  • 2.5 mm crochet hook (use a larger mm hook size if are more comfortable with one)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

🪡Stitches Used (Us Terms)

  • Slip stitch (sl st)
  • Picot stitch (p st)
  • Single crochet (sc)
  • Double crochet (dc)
  • Chain stitch (ch)

✂️How to Make

Step 1: Make the flower center with brown yarn.

4 chain crochet stitch and a loop.

Form a small loop with 4 foundation chain stiches as follows: Slip knot, ch 4, sl st into first ch to form a loop (the center ring). (Alternatively, make a magic ring or magic circle) (images 1 and 2).

Crochet stitches to make second row of a circle.

Row 1: Ch 2. Make 11 dc into the chain loop. Sl st into the 2nd ch made at the beginning of the row (image 3). The first 2 ch stitches act as 1 dc stitch. You should have a total of 12 stitches in this row.

Row 2: Ch 2. Make 2 dc into the third stitch from hook (image 4 - the white lines denote the 2 dc into one stitch). Continue making 2 dc into each stitch. The last stitch in this row should be a single dc as the earlier 2 chain stitches at the beginning count as the second dc.

Starting the 3rd row of a round crochet motif.

Sl st into the 2nd ch made at the beginning of the row. You should have 23 dc stitches. The 2 ch at the beginning of the row will count as the 24th dc.

Row 3: Ch 2(image 5). Make 2 dc into the 3rd ch from hook followed by 1 dc in the next stitch (image 6 - the 'v' lines denote 2 dc into 1 stitch and the single line denotes 1 dc into 1 stitch).

Completing the 3rd row of a round crochet motif.

Repeat the 2 dc and 1 dc in alternate order until the end. The last dc should be a single dc as shown by the white line on image 7. Sl st in the 2nd ch made at the beginning of the row (image 8).

You should have 35 dc. The 2 ch at the beginning of the row will count as the 36th dc.

Step 2: Make the sunflower petals.

Yellow yarn joined to brown circle crochet motif.

Join the yellow yarn by looping it into the last brown yarn loop. To get a clearer view on how to loop, watch the video above ( minute 3:57 in the video). Ch 2 (image 9). Cut off the brown yarn, leaving a tail of about 7 or 8 cm.

Making sunflower petals with yellow yarn.

First petal: Make 1 dc into the 3rd ch from hook (image 10).

Ch 2. P st into the second ch stitch (images 11 & 12).

Note: If you are not sure how to do the picot stitch, after making the 2 ch stitches, insert hook into the back of the first ch and make a slip st. That is called picot stitch. It will give the petals a natural pointy tip.

Making sunflower petals with yellow yarn.

One dc into the same stitch as the first dc as shown by the white line on image 13. Ch 2, sc into the next stitch (image 14).

Second petal: Ch 2. Make 1 dc into the next ch (image 15). Ch 2. P st into the second ch stitch (image 16).

Stitching yellow yarn into a brown crochet circle.

One dc into the same stitch as the first dc of the 2nd petal (image 17).

Making sunflower petals with yellow yarn.

Ch 2, sc into the next stich (images 18 & 19).

Third to 18th petals: Repeat the steps from the second petal above. For the last petal, the last sc should be into the first ch made for the first petal. You should have a total of 18 petals altogether.

Step 3: Fasten the loose ends.

Fasten a crochet sunflower motif by pulling off the excess yarn.

Remove the hook. Cut the yarn, leaving a tail. Fasten the yellow yarn by pulling it out from where the hook was removed (images 20 & 21).

Note: Pull the yarn by holding the loop and not the end of the excess yarn. Pulling the end of the yarn will remove your stitches.

Fastening loose yarns with a needle and cutting off the excess.

Thread the yarn into a tapestry needle and stitch it through a few stitches (image 22). Cut off the excess (image 23).

Do the same for the remaining loose ends of the brown and yellow yarns.

Tips

Crochet sunflower coaster in a bowl of water.

If your crochet flower curls up or does not lay flat, dip it in water until completely soaked (image 24), remove and gently squeeze the water.

Dabbing a wet crochet flower with paper towel.

Place it on a flat surface, on a dry towel or kitchen towel. Press another dry towel or cloth on it to absorb as much water as possible and let it dry in that flat position (images 25 & 26). This will give you a nice and flat flower coaster.

2 crochet sunflowers, one in full view, the other only half.

Also, if you want to make thicker coasters, use a thicker yarn.

And when making the flower center, make sure the yarn tension is not too tight to prevent the crochet circle from curling up.
