- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
🪡Stitches Used (Us Terms)
- Slip stitch (sl st)
- Picot stitch (p st)
- Single crochet (sc)
- Double crochet (dc)
- Chain stitch (ch)
✂️How to Make
Step 1: Make the flower center with brown yarn.
Form a small loop with 4 foundation chain stiches as follows: Slip knot, ch 4, sl st into first ch to form a loop (the center ring). (Alternatively, make a magic ring or magic circle) (images 1 and 2).
Row 1: Ch 2. Make 9 dc into the chain loop. Sl st into the 2nd ch made at the beginning of the row (image 3).
Row 2: Ch 2. Make 2 dc into the third stitch from hook and every stitch after that (images 4 and 5).
Sl st into the 2nd ch made at the beginning of the row (image 6). You should have 19 dc. The 2 ch at the beginning of the row will count as the 20th dc.
Step 2: Make the sunflower petals.
Join the yellow yarn by looping it into the last brown yarn loop (image 7).
First petal: Ch 2. Make 1 dc into the 3rd ch from hook (image 8).
Ch 2. P st into the second ch stitch (image 9).
Note: If you are not sure how to do the picot stitch, after making the 2 ch stitches, slip st into the first of the 2 ch stitches. That is called picot stitch.
One dc into the same stitch as the first dc. Ch 2, sc into the next stitch (image 10).
Second petal: Ch 2. Make 1 dc into the next ch. Ch 2. P st into the second ch stitch. One dc into the same stitch as the first dc of the petal. Ch 2, sc into the next stich.
Third to tenth petals: Repeat the steps for second petal above. For the last petal, the last sc should be into the first ch made for the first petal. You should have a total of 10 petals altogether (image 11).
Step 3: Fasten the loose ends.
Remove the hook. Cut both the yellow yarn and brown yarn, leaving a tail for both. Fasten the yellow yarn by pulling it out from where the hook was removed (image 12).
Note: Pull the yarn by holding the loop and not the end of the excess yarn. Pulling the end of the yarn will remove your stitches.
Thread the yarn into a tapestry needle and stitch it through a few stitches (image 13). Cut off the excess (image 14).
For the brown yarn, thread it into a tapestry needle, similar to the yellow yarn and stitch it through a few stitches before trimming it off.
This is how the completed crochet sunflower applique would look like (image 15).
Step 4: Make the leaves.
Each leaf is crocheted separately and attached to the flower using simple stitches with crochet yarn and tapestry needle.
Make a slip knot and ch 6 (image 16).
Row 1: Work 1 dc in the 3rd ch from hook. . Continue with one dc in each st until the end of the row. You should have 4dc (image 17).
Row 2: Turn over. Ch 2. Work 1 dc on the third stich from hook (image 18). 2 dc in the next stitch (image 19).
Ch 2, p st into the second ch (image 20).
2 dc into the next stitch, followed by 1 dc in the next stitch (image 21). Ch 2 and sl st into the last stitch on row 1 (image 22).
Remove the hook. Leave a reasonably long tail of yarn and cut the rest off. Fasten by pulling the loop out from where the hook was removed.
Repeat the steps above to make 2 more leaves, making sure to leave sufficiently long excess yarn to attach the leaves to the crochet sunflower.
Step 5: Attach the crochet leaves to the sunflower.
Place the crocheted sunflower on a flat surface and position the leaves at the back of the sunflower as you wish. Secure the leaves temporarily with pins or stitch markers if necessary (image 23).
Starting with the first leaf, thread the excess yarn into a tapestry needle and stitch it to the back of the flower (image 24). Make sure the green color yarn is not visible from the front of the flower. Once securely attached, stich the remaining yarn through a few stitches on the leaf and cut off the excess (image 25).
Repeat for the other 2 leaves. And this is how the completed crochet sunflower design would look like (image 26).
Tips
- When making the flower center, make sure the yarn tension is not too tight to prevent the crochet circle from curling up.
- The crochet leaves are optional, you can totally omit them, reduce the number or increase as you wish. You can also make larger leaves by using a thicker yarn or by increasing the number of the initial chain stitches.
- If your crochet flower curls up or does not lay flat, dip it in water until completely soaked, and the place it on a flat surface. Press a dry towel or cloth on it to absorb as much water as possible and let it dry in that flat position. This will give you a nice and flat flower.
