How to Make Beaded Hoop Earrings

These lovely pair of DIY handmade beaded hoop earrings in blue crystal and pearl beads are not only easy to make, they are super quick too! Learn how to make these pretty hoops with the step by step tutorial below.

These beaded hoop earrings are made using pre-made hoop earrings in silver metal. The earrings are meant to be attached to the ears directly and therefore, there is no need for any additional ear wires (earrings wires) or earring hook. I used a combination of 4 different types of beads - 8mm metallic blue crystal beads, 8mm royal blue pearl beads, 3mm turquoise blue crystal beads and 5mm antique silver beads.

The beads are strung into the silver metal hoop in alternate order with a simple blue pearl bead dangle in the middle. Each end of the beads row are adorned beautifully with antique silver bead.

The silver hoops used to make these pair of beaded hoop earrings is a plain wire hoop with a loop at one end and a 90 degrees bent latch at the other end.

The finished beaded hoop earrings measure 5cm long and 3.5cm wide. These earrings are simple enough for casual wear and make a great pair of hoops for any special occasion too!

Supplies

• 8 Round metallic blue round beads (8mm in diameter)
• 6 Royal blue round pearl beads (8mm in diameter)
• 14 Turquoise blue round crystal beads (3mm in diameter)
• 4 Antique silver round beads (5mm in diameter)
• 2 Silver hoop earrings (premade in silver metal)
• 2 Headpins (20mm long each)

Tools

• Round nose pliers
• Flat nose pliers

Making the pearl bead dangle

• Start by make the pearl dangle that hang in the center of the beads row on each hoop.

1. To make the dangle, you will need 1 pearl bead, 1 turquoise crystal bead and one headpin for each side.
2. To begin, insert the 3mm turquoise bead into the headpin.
3. Next, insert the pearl bead.
4. Push the beads to the end of the headpin. Holding the beads in place with one hand, bend the excess headpin to a 45 degrees angle with your fingers on the other hand. If your headpins are longer, trim off the excess wire (with wire cutters)
5. Using the round nose pliers, form a loop with the bent pin wire. Insert the end of the wire into the bead hole.
6. Set aside. Repeat the process to make another set of pearl bead dangle.

Adjusting the earring hoops

1. Open the hoop earrings.
2. Using the flat nose plier, straighten the bent end at the edge of the hoop. Start by holding the bent end with the plier.
3. Gently pull it out to flatten it. Be careful not to distort the shape of the hoops.
4. Next, place a longer section of the hoop wire into the plier. Press the plier to further straighten the wire. The wire need not be perfectly straight, suffice if it is able to take in the smallest of the beads into the earrings.

Assembling the blue beaded hoop earrings

1. Insert the antique silver bead.
2. Next insert a metallic blue bead and a small turquoise bead. And then add a blue pearl bead.
3. Follow again with a small turquoise bead.
4. Repeat the step with a metallic bead and a turquoise bead.
5. Next, insert the pearl dangle prepared in step 1 above.
6. Mirror the order of the beads inserted before the dangle. Start with a small turquoise bead, followed by a blue metallic bead. Add another turquoise bead, followed by a blue pearl bead. Finally, add a turquoise bead again and then the metallic blue bead. Finish off the beaded hoop earring with the antique silver bead.

Adjusting the bent end of the hoop earrings

• The final step in making the beaded hoop earrings is to make sure the un-looped end of the hoop is bent to at least 90 degrees angle. This will ensure the beads do not roll out of the hoop.
• Since the end was straightened in the earlier step to insert the beads, you need to bend it back to its original state.

1. Do this by holding the end with a flat nose plier.
2. Gently bend it to a 90 degrees angle.
3. To ensure the silver bead (which is the last bead in the row) is not able to pass through the bend, try to push it out. If it does, adjust the angle of the bend to a higher degree.
4. And that completes the first of the beaded hoop earrings pair. Repeat the steps to make the other side of the beaded hoop earrings pair.

Options

• The metal earring hoop - I used a silver colored metal hoop measuring 3.5cm in diameter. You can always replace this with a gold hoop or even a bronze hoop. You can even use sterling silver hoops if you like. Alternatively, if you would like to make your own hoops, you can make them with memory wire.
• The earring hoop size - The size of the hoop for making these earrings is 3.5cm in diameter. You can make these earrings with a larger or small hoop size, however, you might need to also adjust the size of the beads used so that they are proportionate to the hoop size.
• The beads color - These beaded hoop earrings are in blue. I used 3 different shades of blue to make these pair. They are metallic blue, royal blue and turquoise. You can always change the color of the beads to the ones you like.
• Beads shape and make - This earrings are best made with round beads. However, you can replace the round bead used to make the earring dangle with beads of teardrop shape. You can also use seed beads to make this earrings, but I would suggest to only use them to replace the 3mm turquoise beads. As for the make, I used faux pearl, crystal and metal beads. You can use glass beads in your like and genuine pearl beads too.

How to wear the hoop earrings

• To put on these beaded hoop earrings, open up the hoop.
• Hold your earlobe on one hand and stretch it down gently, making sure to hold the ear lobe below the earring hole on the lobe.
• Gently insert the bent end of the hoop into your earring hole. Stretching the earlobe slightly makes it easier to insert the hoop.
• Once the hoop is in, hook the back of the hoop to close it.
• Adjust the earring so that the beads are well positioned towards the bottom of the hoops.

How to avoid the beads on the hoops from falling out

• These beaded hoop earrings do not have any stoppers on the sides to hold the beads in place. This means the beads are not held tightly in place, but can move freely in the hoop.
• This is not really a problem as the size of the beads and their weight make them fall into place well once the hoops are put on.

The looped end of the hoop

• The loop on one end of the pre made hoops prevent the beads from falling out from that end.

The bent end of the hoop earrings

• The 90 degrees bent end on the other end of the metal hoop also prevent the beads from falling out from that end.
• Having said that, larger beads have the tendency to be able to fall out even with the bent end, and this is especially so if the wire is bent at a lesser than 90 degrees angle.
• In the case of the handmade beaded hoop earrings in this tutorial, if you use beads of the exact same size as mentioned in my supplies list above, especially the antique silver beads, you will not have any problems of the beads falling out of the hoop, provide the end of the hoop is bend at a 90 degrees angle and not anything lower than that.
• To be absolutely sure that the silver bead at the end of the beaded row does not fall though the bend loop, try to push it out gently through it. If it is able to fall out, use a flat nosed plier to bend the bent end to a larger degree. That way, you can be sure that the beads, despite being able to move freely on the hoop, will not roll out it when the hoops are open.
